How and when to apply facial masks

The first thing we tend to do when we feel our skin became tired and rough is to apply face mask packs. The function of face masks is to provide intensive ingredients essential to our skin. They prevent moisture evaporation, remove keratin and impurities in our skin, provide moisture and nutrition, and revitalize our skin.

Recently, there are several types of facial masks available: rinse off facial masks, peel off facial masks, and mask sheet type facial masks with high concentration of essence. Directions of use may differ between each type of facial mask. But there are common principles to keep in mind before and after applying facial masks in order to maximize benefits of face masks.

Frequency of Facial Mask Sheet

Facial mask sheets are products providing nutrition to tired skin. For the function and purpose of facial masks, it is common to contain high concentrated essence in the mask sheet. Therefore, too frequent use of facial masks might irritate your facial skin as frequent spa massage might result in the same result. What we recommend is to use every 3 days or 1~2 times a week for the best benefits.

Prior to applying the facial mask

  • Double cleanse well. Even though you did not apply make up on the day, your face is exposed to dirt and wastes all day long so make sure to cleanse using a cleansing oil or foam. (Please read the article on Double Facial Cleansing.
  • It is good to open the pores. Cover your face with steamed towel or soak your face into the big bowl filled with warm water with a chamomile tea bag.
  • Follow the direction. Apply a face mask sheet for the duration suggested in the direction.
  • If it is a wash off facial mask, apply thick on your face. Avoid sensitive areas such as eyes and mouth.

While applying the facial mask

Rest on your bed as your legs are leaned 45 degrees upward against the wall. Skewed blood and oxygen will be provided to your brain and you will experience relaxation and increased benefits of facial mask at the same time.

After applying the facial mask

You can soothe and maintain the moist and nourished skin by applying enough moisturizing cream or lotion after using facial mask. If you used a sheet type facial mask, you can just pat your face with the remaining essence on your face.

Benefits of Cucumber to Skin

Cucumber is one of the Best Sheet Masks

Updated for 2020

In the article 5 Reasons Exercise is Good for the Skin the author mentions correctly that exercise is beneficial for controlling acne-prone skin, managing enlarged pores, influencing production of collagen for aged skin, reducing cellulite and cleansing toxins on our skin. In a long term, people with regular exercise tend to have overall better complexion.
But a diet is equally important.
I've changed my food choice toward healthier options. Since I have to build muscles, high intake of protein with moderate amount of carbohydrates and healthy fats were required. I had no choice but to go for brown rice, whole grain breads, veggies, fruits and almonds, omega oil pills and olive oil for healthy carbs and fats along with lean meats, fish and non fat milk for proteins.
Not many people realize that exercise is good for our skin. Same goes for foods that we choose. I did not realize until now that healthy choice of foods could enhance my skin like this. Now, I will focus on one of my greatest food selection. Cucumber.

Cucumber Benefits to Skin

Cucumber is an excellent source of silica, a trace mineral that holds up our connective tissue together and contributes to the strength to them. Silica has numerous benefits to our health and skin and I will focus on skin. Edith M. Carlisle, Ph.D conducted studies on chicks in 1970s and 1980s. Her studies proved that silica contained in cucumber produced 100 times more bone collagen over those not receiving dietary silica. Further, their bones revealed a slow, yet impressive, rise in calcium content. Silica's contribution to the strength of our connective tissue is essential to a youthful appearance of the skin. Silica is also proven as an inhibitor of the aging process in tissues. A deficiency of silica and hyaluronic acid accelerates skin aging because connective tissues cannot hold water efficiently. Studies have shown that silica appears to be part of the synthesis of proline (a major constituent of collagen), which is required in the making of deoxycollagen. Furthermore, a study by Carlisle shows that the optimal working of "prolyl hydroxylase," an enzyme critical to collagen synthesis, depends on silica.
The above paragraph is a little technical in explaining the benefits of cucumber to our skin. But it is a useful information knowing that the substance called silica contained in cucumber promotes collagen and inhibits skin aging.
A cucumber is also a great treatment for troubled skin such as sun-damaged (burned) skin, acne skin and dehydrated skin types.
Every summer when my skin is exposed to burning hot UV rays, they become burned and damaged. What I do then is to slice a cucumber very thinly and put on the problem areas. Substances in cucumber sooth, calm and revitalize sun-damaged skin. Applying cucumber for only 2-3 days should do wonder for your sun-damaged skin as well.
A cucumber calms sever acne skin conditions. I am regretful that I did not take any pictures of my severely covered acne condition to prove that cucumbers can really improve all acne-prone skin type. If you are impatient or think one month is too long to make a change, skip this part. But for those who are willing to follow this advice are welcomed to continue reading the wonders of cucumbers. If you have sever acne problems on your face, eat one cucumber daily for at least a month and see what happens to your face. I will stop for this one here. You will thank me for saving hundreds of bucks for acne treatment with anti-acne products and dermatological experience.
A cucumber also hydrates your skin. In order to moisturize your skin, you can apply sliced pieces of cucumbers on your skin, cucumber facial mask sheets containing cucumber extracts, or simply by consuming it. Especially these days when temperatures go up to mid 90s (F), our skin dries up very quickly and require more fluids than other seasons. The high water content makes cucumbers a diuretic and it also has a cleansing action within the body by removing accumulated pockets of old waste material and chemical toxins. Including cucumber in your diet can provide the last 20% of moisture your skin is waiting for.
Did you know that cucumbers are also good for swelling and puffy eyes with dark circles? They reduce swelling eyes and improve dark circles. Using cucumber effectiveness in our skin, many skin care products using cucumber extracts are manufactured. Its juice is a nourishing vitamin for our skin. It is also a good rejuvenator and makes us feel and look younger.
You can manage your skin using cucumbers in many ways. As I mentioned, you can eat a cucumber daily, apply sliced cucumbers on your skin, make homemade cucumber facial mask or you can use our product, Faifia Cucumber facial mask. Its main active ingredients are cucumber extracts, glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid and collagen.

Faifia Green Tea Facial Mask

Green Tea Facial Masks are One of the Best

I've posted the advantages of facial mask sheets in a regular basis. Briefly saying, these are very convenient, highly effective in moisturizing and providing nutrition to your skin, increases the ability of cosmetic absorption, and can bring better results than spa massages that cost around $70~$100. These facial mask sheets are designed for both women and men who have busy life with no time for skin care, staying at home mom busy with kids, someone waiting for special occasions such as wedding, parties, long time flight that causes skin dehydration, and/or vacation trips and list goes on.

You can think of facial mask sheets as a bottle of essence. This one sheet is highly concentrated with nutritious extracts and skin friendly ingredients. This is why you can see the instant, quick result right after applying this facial mask. You should benefit from using these facial masks 2-3 times a week depending on your skin condition. Unlike other wash off type facial masks, these facial masks has minimal irritation to skin and are safe to use.

In this article, I would like to share the benefits of Faifia Green Tea facial mask including its main ingredients and their functions to our skin.

Although there are many green tea products from pills to cosmetic products, there aren't many genuine green tea products containing green tea extract that certain amount is required to benefits our skin. While shopping for green tea products, look for the ingredients stating green tea extract or catechins or EGCG.

Main Ingredients of Green Tea facial mask

1. Green tea Extract

One of the main ingredients that Faifia Green Tea facial mask contains is green tea extract. According to several studies conducted, green tea protects from skin cancer. In addition, both animal and human studies have proved that green tea ingredients reduce sun damage. If you are exposed to strong sunlight for a long time like the recent weather in Seattle, applying this green tea facial mask or leftover green tea bags after drinking tea would greatly calm your damaged skin. How green tea can calm our sun damaged skin is by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation instead of blocking UV rays. Antioxidants in green tea appears to reduce inflammation. Furthermore, according to a small study, 2% polyphenone, a particular type of green tea extract, benefits papulopustular rosacea. Particularly, a significant inflammatory lesion reduction was shown compared to placebo.

2. Glycerin

(source: http://www.skincarebeautyzone.com/skin-care/significance-of-glycerin-in-skin-care/)

Glycerin is the most common ingredients used in skin care products because its benefits to our skin is greater than its costs. This helps enhance the look of our skin.

Glycerin plays a vital role in build up of your skin structure. Many cosmetic products contain glycerin as one of its ingredients. It has been used in wide variety of skincare products since many years. It plays a key role in layering of skin and serves for many other purposes of your health.
Glycerin can serve you in many specific purposes including skin. Some of them include:

  • Glycerin is a non toxic product which has no side effects, when mixed with water and also with any other delivery system.
  • It should not be used in its pure form as it has more water drawing properties.
  • As glycerin has sweet tasting properties, it can be used in preparing food for flavoring. Unlike sugar, it will not increase the blood sugar levels in your body and it can also be used in cosmetics and other personal hygienic products.
  • It is very useful in moistening the dry skin.
  • Soaps made with glycerin are very gentle and do not cause any irritation for your skin and they are very fine to use on your children’s skin.
  • It acts as humectant and helps in restoring the water levels in your skin and prevents dryness of your skin.
  • Wrinkles on your skin mainly occur due to loss of water, elasticity and moisture in your skin. So, this glycerin mainly helps in rejuvenating your skin and restoring water in your skin.
  • As your age increases, the resources of your skin start depleting and cannot be restored by your body. So, by using glycerin, your skin resources get enhanced.
  • It is also used for soothing the symptoms of eczema [Eczema Treatment] and avoids the itchiness and dryness of your skin.

3. Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a natural substance that our bodies has. HA is found in human connective tissues. This substance occurs naturally in the dermis (deeper layers of our skin). HA helps keep our skin smooth and plump through its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Hyaluronic Acid plays a significant role in the quick repairmen of wounds and other skin conditions.

4. Collagen

There are two proteins in our skin: collagen and elastin. As we age, the production of these two proteins decreases and this becomes a major reason for fine lines, wrinkles and aging of the skin. In order to re-grow these reduced production of collagen and elastin, many women go for plastic surgery such as botox injection or wrinkle removing surgeries and they also apply collagen containing skin care products. Cost-efficient method that I personally prefer to choose is to supplement collagen contained products. Although these products cannot permanently reverse your already reduced level of collagen, it can help slow the process of aging of our skin.

5. Carrot Extract

Our skin loves carrots. Vitamin A is abundant in carrots which contain antioxidants that are good for our skin. Antioxidants helps balance the pH of the skin's surface, making it slightly acidic. Slightly acidic skin fends off bacterial invaders.

Do you want to feed your skin with highly concentrated nutrition and hydration? Faifia Green Tea facial mask will do wonders for your skin.

Green Tea for Beautiful Skin

Green tea offers so many benefits to the skin and to the body. It contains antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and anti-bacterial properties. It is not a mystery green tea is so popular in the cosmetic industry. Loaded with Vitamin E and C, the antioxidant agents slow the signs of aging externally and provide beneficial vitamins for overall health when taken internally.

Furthermore, recent research has concluded that green tea can prevent cancer. The death rate in Japan from cancer is significantly lower than that in the States. In Japan, green tea is part of their daily staple and consumed as much as 5 to 6 cups a day. This suggests that the main ingredients in green tea (*tannin, **catechin-see definition below) in sufficient amounts can lower the mortality rates of cancer patients.

Additionally, green tea can lower high blood pressure and lower blood sugar levels for those suffering with diabetes or the onset thereof. Caffeinated tea refreshes the body when taken internally; it stimulates the body’s organs and clears the mind. Green tea can lower cholesterol by restricting the excessive buildup of (LDL) cholesterol. Research has also suggested that green tea can inhibit skin cancer due to its protective properties.

Overall, green tea drinkers seem to enjoy better health. The vital ingredient Catechin is 100 times more potent than Vitamin C and 25 times more potent than Vitamin E.

Green Tea Facial Toner

5 green tea bags or several heaping teaspoons of green tea leaves
1/3 to ½ cup fresh herb, chopped (see list below for your specific skin type)
2 cups mineral water or vitamin water

Combine all ingredients in a small pot. Bring to boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Strain if necessary. Apply with cotton ball. The toner will keep for at least one week in the refrigerator.

Dry skin: Elderflower, linden flowers, and marigold.
Normal skin: chamomile - especially good for antiseptic values, fennel, lemon balm, parsley, and rosemary.
Oily Skin: Chamomile-especially good for antiseptic values, fennel, lemon balm, parsley, rosemary, and peppermint and sage-especially good for antiseptic values.

*Definition of catechin: The antioxidant activity about 25-100 times more potent than vitamins C and E. One cup of green tea may provide 10-40mg of polyphenols and can have an antioxidant activity greater than a serving of broccoli, spinach, carrots, or strawberries. A catechin is effective because it sticks to proteins easily and blocks bacteria from adhering to cell walls. This disrupts their ability to destroy them. The catechin in green tea also prevents viruses from adhering to cell walls and causing harm.

Facial Masks: Friend or Foe?

While thumbing through one of those catalogs that seem to make it to my mailbox every now and then I recently came across an ad entitled “Magnificent in Minutes”. Being intrigued I read on to discover that this product was actually a specially formulated peel off facial mask promising to tighten your pores and firm aging skin in minutes. All you had to do was apply a thin coat all over your face and neck weekly and after 20 minutes simply peel it off to reveal younger, firmer skin. Wow! Twenty minutes one a week and I would look younger and firmer! Since it did not mention any age I guess it worked for anyone, no matter how old they were. This miracle facial mask had the added benefit of removing impurities as well as smoothing wrinkles. All that in just 20 minutes? And to think this product cost less than $17! Then I started thinking….if I applied a coat of this miracle product to my backside would it reveal a younger, firmer butt? If so, I was ordering a case!! Then I read the list of ingredients and found out that this product contained 4 chemical preservative, 2 forms of sugar, an artificial fragrance, 2 artificial colors and something called Octoxynol-9, which I found listed at drugs.com as being a common spermicide. If spermicide kills sperm, which are living organisms, what exactly does this ingredient do to my living skin cells?

I recently came across an ad on the internet for another facial mask dubbed The Anti-Fatigue mask that was supposed to be a treatment for tired stressed skin. The ingredient list read: Aqua, Caprylic/CapricTriglyceride, Squalane, Glycerin, Triticum Vulgare, Cyclopentasiloxane, Biosaccharide Gum-1, Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate Copolymer, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Disodium EDTA, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Methylparaben, Triethanolamine, Cyclohexasiloxane, Propylparaben, Isohexadecane, Polysorbate-80, Hydrolyzed Corallina Officinalis, Panax Ginseng, Pyrus Malus, Prunus Persica, Triticum Vulgare, Hordeum Vulgare, Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Bisulfite, Rumex Crispus, Ascorbic Acid, Parfum, CI 16035, CI 19140. All this stuff and costs less than $14! Just what the heck IS this stuff and how does it de-stress my skin? I don’t know about you but I got stressed and tired just reading this ingredient list!! Whew!

Come on ladies, are we really buying this hype? Do we really think that a bottle full of synthetic chemicals can make us look younger and firmer or de-stress our tired skin? And if so, at what costs to our health? Is it worth turning our bodies into a chemical dump site in the name of youth and perceived beauty?

No product is going to make your skin significantly younger or firmer. Face it, if you are 40 you are never going to have 30 year old skin again unless maybe you undergo cosmetic surgery! But your skin can have a healthy, youthful glow if you feed it right. Skin is a living organism and you need to feed it healthy food, not chemicals. There are healthier choices in facial masks for drawing the impurities out of your skin. Mineral clay masks are a great option as long as they are not mixed with synthetic ingredients. Read labels, look for organic or food grade ingredients and avoid toxic synthetics whenever possible. The choices you make today will have a large impact on the way your skin looks tomorrow as well as on your overall health.

Best Homemade Masks For Oily Skin

Nutrition masks for oily skin are a very good substitute for expensive creams: They are cheap, easy to make and they give exactly the same results. This is how you're going to make them yourselves.

Many skin care and cosmetic products for oily skin declare that their products are made from "natural ingredients" and contain organic compound that are originated from fruit and plants. The modern cosmetics is going back to the routs, and uses more and more natural ingredients instead of chemicals that were very popular in the recent decades.

This trend, makes the totally natural approach one of the best and most effective ways of skin care. Who needs expensive creams when fruits and vegetables that are available in any grocery store will do the exact same work? (and maybe even better).

We all know the cucumber slices that people like to put on their eyes to reduce the swelling, the fatigue signs and the annoying little bags under the eyes. Beside the cosmetic effect, the cool liquids have a very soothing effect and they can help to improve your mood and calm you in the hot summer days.

A good homemade facial masks will help you to regain the nutritious substances that the skin need, like moistness, vitamins and oils. A mask for oily skin will also contain drying substances that will reduce the amount of oil in the skin and remove the dead cells from the upper layer of the skin, the dermis. Include Facial masks to you skin care routine

Facial masks provide deep nourishment to the skin, so why do so many people neglect this pampering product? Because it takes time—most masks need to remain on the skin for about 15 minutes, notes Joni Keim, technical director of Natural Resource Group, the parent company of Beauty Without Cruelty based in Petaluma, Calif. "Not many people are looking for ways to add time to their skin-care routine," she says, but she points out that with a little effort and education, retailers can help their customers understand just what a nourishing treat a mask can be.

And the benefits are many. Masks can be used to moisturize, detoxify, increase circulation and replenish nutrients. But above all, they add an extra dimension to the skin-care routine, and they are truly pampering. "It's something [people] can do at home that will give them the effect they would get at a spa," says Joshua Onysko, CEO and founder of Pangea Organics in Boulder, Colo. "It's a treat for them—something a little bit out of the ordinary."

The first step in helping your customers choose the correct mask is to identify their skin type and find something that will work for them. "You want a mask that is going to fill the needs of your skin, so obviously someone with acne doesn't need a hydrating mask because they already have too much oil," advises Linda Upton, president of Börlind of Germany, with U.S. headquarters in New London, N.H. "Figure out what dimension of care [your customer's] skin still needs, and find a mask that's designed to meet that need."

The following roundup of facial masks is broken down by skin type to help retailers navigate the latest offerings.

Mature skin
Börlind LL Vital Cream Mask. This rich cream mask replenishes nutrients and oils in dehydrated skin as it supports cell renewal and improves circulation. This is a great mask for people with broken capillaries—it contains menthol, camphor and rosemary to stimulate blood flow and prevent circulatory congestion.

Zia Natural 15 Minute Face Lift. This mask is designed to give mature skin a pick-me-up. Cornstarch, wheat protein and silk powder firm the skin, giving it a more youthful appearance for up to 10 hours, the company says.

Dry skin
Beauty Without Cruelty Hydrating Mask. The natural humectants in this rich cream mask draw moisture to the skin and hold it there. Emollients like sunflower and jojoba oils condition the skin, and gentle herbs like German chamomile and lavender rejuvenate and nourish. This mask is mild enough to be used daily, according to Keim.

MyChelle Fruit Fiesta Peel."A peel is a mask that will dissolve and digest dead skin cells while accelerating exfoliation," explains MyChelle's founder Myra Eby. This peel uses alpha and beta hydroxy and fruit enzymes to remove dead skin cells; the antioxidants and vitamins then nourish the skin.

Combination skin
Aubrey Organics Sea Buckthorn and Cucumber with Ester C Moisturizing Mask. Formulated for combination skin, the botanicals in this mask were chosen because they won't dry out the skin or clog pores. Oatmeal and ground walnuts and almonds gently exfoliate and moisturize.

6 Steps to Health Beautiful Facial Skin

6 steps to healthy, glowing skin

You've helped your customer choose the perfect facial mask for her skin type. Now you need to teach her how to use it. Here are some advice on how best to apply a normal facial mask (we tend to look at facial mask sheets on this site as there are more benefits I believe. But we dont want to leave out the people who enjoy the regular facial masks.

  • Start by cleansing the skin. "Use some sort of acid cleanser so it will take dead skin off and allow the mask to penetrate," Fomenko says.
  • If your customer has the time, advise her to steam her face for a few minutes either by using a facial steamer or by draping a towel over her head and leaning over a sink full of hot water. This will allow for deeper mask penetration.
  • Apply the mask. Beauty Without Cruelty's Keim likes to do this before getting in the bath—first because it minimizes the mess and second because the steam from the bath keeps masks from drying out. "If they stay warm and moist, [masks] are very active," she notes.
  • A few minutes before it's time to remove the mask (go by the manufacturer's instructions), apply a hot compress to the face, and leave it on until it's time to wipe the mask off.
  • After removing the mask, moisturize the skin. For customers with dry skin, recommend a heavy nourishing cream. For normal to oily skin, go with a light serum. Follow with sunblock.
  • Repeat two or three times a week for acne or very oily skin. For normal skin, once a week is fine.

Skin Problems During Spring

Skin Care Tips for Spring Skin Problems

The increase in temperature, UV rays, pollen and dirt causes sebum to increase and our skin becomes oily. This is why skin troubles frequently arise during Spring.

Also as we tend to become more active during the warmer season and we stay outdoors, our skin loses water from regular outdoor activities and so the outer skin becomes oily and dehydrated. Sound familiar?

Below are a few issues that we can handle.

Q: Oily Skin causing issues?

A: As I mentioned above, sudden increases in the temperature causes our hormone secretion to become very active. The dirt and pollen in Spring also tends to provide various skin problems and we should remove unnecessary sebum and waste by cleansing and supplementing with water for our dehydrated skin.

Remember to use a foam cleanser when washing your face and apply skin toner right afterwards to prevent dryness. If you use highly effective astringent (gentle pore minimizing) skin toner, it helps to adjust sebum secretion and reduces the oil on your face as well as preventing further skin problems.

Q: Rough skin doesn't go away?

A: Skin toners may not be enough if your skin is too dry. Maintain moisture balance by using moisturizing essence as well.

When putting on makeup, protect your skin by using base makeup products that contain enough moisture and face and body liquids containing plenty of mineral oil.

Q: Stinging Sensation after basic skin care?

A: If you feel like your skin is stinging after a basic skin care routine, try putting on some suncream as the base.

So there you go. Some simple skin care tips on handling the effects of Spring and warmer temperatures.
